Why We Need More Holistic Nutritional Therapists

We are in the middle of a health revolution

We are in the middle of a revolution in how we look after our health, with many people now realising that despite the great strengths of modern western medicine in critical situations, our health mostly lies in our own hands. And more and more people are wanting guidance on how they can use more natural means to heal illness, including food, exercise, meditation and emotional healing.

The prevalent approach to medicine today

Modern western culture had almost completely lost the link between our food and our health. I have so many clients still who ask their doctors what they can do themselves to help heal health problems, only to be told ‘there’s nothing you can do, just take the medicine’.

To be clear, I am not against taking medicines when they are really necessary, but we now live in a world where so much illness could firstly be prevented, and then healed, with changes in food and lifestyle.

How will medicine look in the future?

How do I see the future of medicine? Complementary approaches to healing standing alongside western medicine, and being the first approach to deal with many common health problems, with western medicine being used when really necessary. Widespread education in the best ways to look after our health through cooking, exercise etc. Unfortunately this is probably not going to happen for a long time, so it is up to individuals to make their own choices on how to live and eat more healthily, and use a variety of self-help methods when becoming ill.

Strangely, many traditional societies had a good understanding of how to use particular food dishes and teas, herbs, hands on bodywork, emotional counselling, compresses etc. to heal many different health problems and maintain good health. We can see so many people being attracted to yoga, chi gong and other forms of exercise, to eating a plant based diet, mindfulness meditation etc.

How are people getting this new understanding?

It really is possible to be more self-reliant  in taking care of our health and that of our children, family and friends, and this is so empowering! There is so much information out there now, some good some bad. Unfortunately a lot of it is incorrect, exaggerated, designed mostly to make money – and many people are very confused on just what will actually create better health.

What people need are truly knowledgeable guides, with a sound practical training in what really works, who have worked on their own health to create experienced wisdom. Over the last 46 years I have found a combination of Chinese medicine and macrobiotic approaches, combined with modern western nutrition and emotional healing approaches, to be extremely effective in my own life and for the many clients and students I have seen regain strong, balanced health. This holistic way of working is what we train students to do at the International Macrobiotic School.

Who makes a good Holistic Nutritional Therapist?

Anyone who has a deep fascination in how we humans work, how we can create health and heal illness.  It is not necessary to have a very academic background, good common sense and intuition are equally useful and theory can be studied and learnt.

People who want to make changes themselves, to experiment with different foods, exercises and healing practices for their own benefit. So much of what we learn ourselves strengthens the healing we can offer others.

Very often our students are already thinking holistically, they are already seeing that our food, physical health, emotions and lifestyle are all connected and affecting each other.

People who are attracted to helping others, especially through empowering individuals to learn how to take better care of their own health.

How can you use Holistic Nutritional Therapy yourself?

Firstly, to help your own health, learning how to keep your body well, create a happier emotional life, with deeper and more satisfying relationships with people, community and nature.

What you learn you can use to help your family, children, parents etc.
